Suburban Square

Lower Merion Township, PA
AwardSuburbanSuburban Square, an approximately 343,000 sf shopping center, is located along Philadelphia’s Main Line and contains a variety of retailers, offices and restaurants.

When Suburban Square celebrated its seventy-fifth anniversary in 2003 with an expansion that included a new farmers market, a Trader Joe's specialty food market, and a two-level mixed-use building adjacent to the Amtrak/SEPTA R-5 station, they turned to Momenee for the civil/site design. The new farmers market and specialty store were situated in an area that was previously a large parking lot.

The third new building, a two-story 17,228 sf mixed-use structure, accommodates retail and restaurants on the ground floor and offices on the upper floor. It replaced a one-story commercial building and drive through. Located adjacent to Ardmore's SEPTA R-5 train station at the prominent corner of Anderson and Coulter Avenues, SEPTA and the developer coordinated efforts in developing this well-designed pedestrian-friendly, transit-oriented development. SEPTA improved the train platform by replacing the stairways, improving sidewalk connections, and adding lighting, fencing, and landscaping. These improvements contribute to a safer and move welcoming environment for commuters. The new structure enriches the streetscape and pedestrian experience as it was built to the sidewalk and was designed with large storefront windows, enhanced with awnings. Wider sidewalks, used to accommodate outdoor seating for the adjacent restaurants, and the addition of street trees have transformed this area into a popular gathering space for both shoppers and commuters. Enhanced pedestrian connections, traffic-calming improvements, lush landscaping, and decorative lighting blend this new building with the existing shopping center and create an attractive and pedestrian-friendly atmosphere.

Suburban Square is an appealing, popular shopping center that, with these renovations, continues to provide the community with a pleasant shopping environment.
